Ses Salines is the southernmost municipality in Mallorca, with Colònia de Sant Jordi as its tourist centre and the town inland, between salt pans and farmland.
The Colònia has hotels, apartments and harbour restaurants, on the seasonal calendar and with the particularity that the atmosphere here is especially salty: there are working salt pans alongside.
That makes protecting anything left outdoors more important than in other coastal areas. It is one of the places where 316 stainless justifies itself on its own.
And in the town there are stone houses, fincas and some agrotourism, with quiet year-round work.

Right by the sea an installation does not age the same way. The air carries chlorides, and chloride eats the zinc off galvanised steel well before its time. Ductwork that would last inland starts pitting here within a few years.
Outdoors and on the roof we always assess it: either the protection goes up, or we go straight to stainless steel. And when stainless is called for on the seafront, it is AISI 316, which contains molybdenum and is the grade that withstands chlorides. Fitting 304 where 316 belonged is cheaper on day one and dearer in year four.
The outdoor unit suffers first. We site it out of the direct sea wind where there is a choice, and with enough clearance from the wall for the coil to be cleaned, because here it needs cleaning more often than inland.
And the property itself, if it is a holiday let or seasonal, sits closed up with humidity for months. That means the sealing has to be right and the installation has to be checkable before each season without breaking anything open.
The Pla works differently from the coast. Here the village house is large with high ceilings, and that normally works in your favour: there is room to run the ductwork without dropping the ceiling in a way anyone notices.
