Andratx is really two places with one name. There is the village inland, stone houses and narrow streets; and there is the Port, one of the most expensive villa areas on the island.
In the Port and Cala Llamp what we fit is almost always villas, often fully renovated, with the outdoor unit fighting for a spot on a sloping plot and the duct running up to the roof. Right on the water, salt air gives no quarter.
Camp de Mar and Sant Elm have more seasonal apartments and townhouses: properties that sit closed all winter and need to be ready to start in May without surprises.
And in the village and S'Arracó it is a different job: old houses, beamed ceilings and streets a lorry cannot enter.

Right by the sea an installation does not age the same way. The air carries chlorides, and chloride eats the zinc off galvanised steel well before its time. Ductwork that would last inland starts pitting here within a few years.
Outdoors and on the roof we always assess it: either the protection goes up, or we go straight to stainless steel. And when stainless is called for on the seafront, it is AISI 316, which contains molybdenum and is the grade that withstands chlorides. Fitting 304 where 316 belonged is cheaper on day one and dearer in year four.
The outdoor unit suffers first. We site it out of the direct sea wind where there is a choice, and with enough clearance from the wall for the coil to be cleaned, because here it needs cleaning more often than inland.
And the property itself, if it is a holiday let or seasonal, sits closed up with humidity for months. That means the sealing has to be right and the installation has to be checkable before each season without breaking anything open.
In the Tramuntana no two houses are alike, and almost none was built with ductwork in mind. Half-metre stone walls, vaulted floor structures, exposed timber beams the owner has no intention of hiding, and ceilings that change height from room to room.

On a sloping plot it usually ends up on a plant terrace, in a ventilated basement or on a sheltered side. What matters is that the sea wind does not hit it head on and that the coil stays reachable for cleaning, because in Cala Llamp and the Port it needs cleaning more often.
Indoors, galvanised is fine. Outdoors and on the roof by the sea, salt eats it before its time: there we increase protection or go to stainless. We tell you with the quote in front of you; we are not going to sell you the expensive option by default.
